Alumni Stadium Renovation Campaign Update

The new turf is down and we are on our way to our campaign goal of $1 million!

Re-cap of the Farrell Stadium Campaign Kick-off Party at South Fin Grill

The 2017 Alumni Stadium Renovation Capital Campaign was kicked-off in style on Wednesday, May 31 with the help and generosity of 1986 Farrell alumnus Mark Tranchina.  With the Verrazano Bridge and the South Beach Boardwalk as the backdrop, Farrell alumni and friends gathered at South Fin Grill on a beautiful spring night to provide energy and support to the launch of the million-dollar capital campaign to fund much-needed renovations to the athletic field and track at Monsignor Farrell High School.

While sampling some of South Fin’s fine cuisine, the full house of attendees heard from Principal Monsignor Edmund Whalen ‘76, recent Farrell alumnus Frank DiTommaso ’17 and Director of Institutional Advancement John Cusick ’88.  The speakers covered the need for the renovation, the impact of the field and track on student life and the strategy behind raising the necessary funds through remembering our storied past and honoring those who positively impacted Farrell, the athletic programs and the lives of many Farrell men.

Highlights from the evening:

  • Monsignor Whalen announced that in the hours prior to the evening’s program, Farrell received a very generous donation from an alumnus who pledged $25,000 to help start our capital raising efforts.
  • Monsignor Whalen followed up the first exciting announcement by informing the crowd of another act of kindness toward the school. A family foundation that wishes to remain anonymous, committed to Monsignor Whalen a matching “challenge grant” of $100,000!!  The donor was inspired by the first major commitment, and has agreed to match the next $100,000 raised.  During the evening, Farrell received an additional $55,000 in donations and pledges on top of the $25,000 gift announced at the start, so we are only $45,000 away from earning the match and getting a big boost to passing the $200,000 mark!
  • The structure of the campaign was outlined with details given about the five major naming opportunities available within the stadium.  The $25,000 donation announced at the start of the evening plus two additional pledges for $10,000 each were all made in honor of legendary Farrell Football Coach Dennis Barrett.  Coach Barrett has had a meaningful impact on the lives of so many Farrell Men, and now some have stepped up to leave a mark on the Farrell Stadium in his honor.  Other memorable coaches, teachers and moderators have also garnered early support for potential naming opportunities including an icon of Staten Island soccer Jack Hynes, a cornerstone of the Farrell track & field program, Monsignor Peter Finn, and a teacher, guidance counselor and moderator who guided many Farrell students during the 1990’s, Father Robert Macchietto.
  • Lastly, the competitive spirit is alive and well within our alumni community. The event within the event appears to be the inter-class year challenge, as the chatter began in email chains prior to the South Fin event, and continued into the kick-off party.  Several classes have come together to show their class pride and their strength in fundraising.  A “Class Year Leaderboard” will be posted on the campaign site and updated regularly.
